What to say when you call 988
You do not need perfect words. Pick one line and start there.
For me:
- "I'm not okay and I need to talk."
- "I've been thinking about ending my life."
- "I'm scared about what's happening with my family and I can't sleep."
For someone else:
- "I'm worried my [son / sister / friend] might hurt themselves. What should I do?"
- "They're here with me. Can you talk to both of us?"
If language is a barrier:
- Spanish: dial 988, then press 2. Or text AYUDA to 988.
- Other languages: say the name of your language, like "Vietnamese" or "Tongan."
If I want to keep details private:
- "I'd rather just give my first name."
If anyone is in danger right now: call 911 and say "mental health emergency, I'm asking for a CIT officer."
