If I am stopped while driving

• Stay calm. Hands on the wheel.
• Show my license and registration to California police if asked.
• I do not have to answer questions about where I was born or my status.
• I can say: "I want to remain silent. I want to talk to a lawyer."
• I will not give a fake name, a fake paper, or say I am a citizen if I am not.

After the stop

• Write down the date, place, officer name or badge, and what happened.
• Read the ticket. Note the court and the date to respond.
• If arrested or charged with a misdemeanor, call a lawyer before I plead.
