The person
- I chose a trusted adult and talked with them about how long, who pays, and our routines.
- I chose a backup adult.
- My children know who would care for them, and have visited that home.
Permission
- We prepared the Caregiver's Authorization Affidavit on the January 2026 form. My caregiver will sign it only if the children come to live with them.
- I asked the court self help center or a family law helper about naming a guardian (GC-211) or joint guardianship.
School and child care
- I updated emergency contacts and pickup instructions at every school and child care.
Papers
- Birth certificates, passports, shot records and insurance cards are in one folder.
- Each child has a health page: doctor, allergies, medicines.
- My caregiver knows where the folder is.
- My family has a copy of my A number, if I have one.
- My children's passports are current, or we applied.
Money
- I wrote a list of bills and due dates.
- I set aside some money my caregiver can reach, or asked my bank about other options.
Calls
- I saved the rapid response number for my county: San Mateo (203) 666-4472, Santa Clara (408) 290-1144.
- I saved my legal helper's number and my consulate's number.
- My children and I know two phone numbers by heart.
- Each adult has a red card, and one is by the door.
