Questions for your first meeting
About them
- What is your full name and your State Bar number? Which state are you licensed in? (Or: what is your organization, and is your accreditation full or DHS only?)
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- Will you do the work yourself? Who else will work on my case?
- Do you carry malpractice insurance?
About my case
- What options do I have? What are the risks of each, including the risk of doing nothing?
- Could applying put me at risk of deportation? Why or why not?
- What papers do you need from me?
- How long do you expect it to take?
About money
- Is your fee flat or hourly? What is your estimate of the total?
- Which government filing fees will I pay on top of your fee?
- Will I get a written agreement, in a language I understand, before I pay?
- If I end the work early, what happens to money I already paid?
- Will I get a receipt for every payment?
About staying in touch
- How do I reach you, and how fast do you usually answer?
- Will you give me copies of everything you file, including Form G-28?
- Will you tell me right away about any notice or deadline?
Write their answers here. If they will not answer, or promise you will win, keep looking.
