Ways to start talking with your teen
Pick one or two. Use your own words and your own language.
- "I have noticed you seem tired lately. How are you really doing?"
- "You do not have to tell me everything. I just want you to know I am here."
- "What has been the hardest part of your week?"
- "Is anything at school or online bothering you?"
- "Are you worried about our family? You can ask me anything."
- "Do you want me to just listen, or help you think it through?"
- "Is there another adult you would feel better talking to?"
- If you are worried about their safety: "Are you thinking about suicide?"
After you talk: thank them, check in again in a few days, and get help if the changes last more than two weeks.
In a crisis, call or text 988. If a life is in danger right now, call 911.
