Helper's referral checklist
Before I say anything
- I have the clinic list ready for everyone, not just one student
- I will not ask about status or write it down
Signs to refer (any one)
- Came to the U.S. without a parent, or was in a federal shelter
- A parent abused, neglected, abandoned them, or is gone
- Crime victim
- Forced to work or held by debt
- Afraid to go back
- Citizen parent or grandparent, or parent became a citizen while they were under 18
- Citizen or green card relative, or an old family petition
- From a TPS country, or has DACA
When referring
- Asked permission first
- Gave the number and said it is free and private
- Told the clinic it is time sensitive if 17 or older
- Offered a private place or time for the call
If abuse or danger
- Followed my mandated reporter steps
- 911 if immediate danger
