Before you share: questions and consent checklist
Ask the person or group
- Who are you, and what is the story for?
- Who will see or hear it? Where will it be posted or printed?
- Will my name, face, voice, city or school be shown?
- Can I review it before it goes out? Can I take it down later?
- Will anyone else in my story be named or shown?
- Is there a written release? Can I read it first?
- Will I be paid? Will travel or child care be covered?
- For events: Will press be there? Are photos allowed? Who handles safety?
Check my own case first
- I have a court date or pending immigration case: I talked to a lawyer first
- My story matches what is in my immigration file
- I left out drugs, arrests, false papers and repeat border crossings
- I left out other people's names, faces and status
Protect my privacy
- I chose how I will be named: full name, first name only, made up name, or no name
- Location tags are off
- Photo backgrounds show no address, school or car plate
- I know what I will not answer, and how I will say it
Take care of me
- A trusted person will come with me or check on me after
- I know I can stop at any time
