What to say, door and street card
Keep this by your door and in your wallet. Practice it with your family.
At the door
- Keep the door closed.
- Ask: "Which agency are you with? Do you have a warrant signed by a judge? Please slide it under the door."
- Say: "I do not consent to you entering. I am choosing to remain silent."
- If they come in anyway: do not resist. Say "I do not consent." Stay silent. Remember what you see.
On the street
- Do not run.
- Ask: "Am I free to go?" If yes, walk away calmly.
- If no, say: "I am choosing to remain silent. I want to speak to a lawyer."
- Say: "I do not consent to a search."
In the car
- Ask: "Are you with the police or with immigration?"
- Police: show your license and registration. You can stay silent about everything else.
- Say: "I do not consent to a search of my car."
Always
- Do not lie. Do not show false papers.
- Do not sign anything without a lawyer.
