What to say when you call for legal help
Have ready: your name, phone, city and county, your A number if you have one, and any notice with its dates.
Say: "Hello, my name is ____________. I live in ____________ County. I need help with ____________ (for example: renewing DACA / a court date on ____________ / my husband was detained / becoming a citizen). Do you help with this?"
Then ask:
- Who do you serve? Do I need a certain income or to live in a certain county?
- Is the first meeting free? If not, how much?
- Will a lawyer or an accredited representative work on my case?
- Do you have someone who speaks my language, or an interpreter?
- What should I bring?
- How soon can I meet someone?
- If you cannot help me, who should I call next?
Write down
| Date | Group and phone | Who I spoke with | What they said | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
If you have a court date: call two or three groups the same day, and bring this log to court.
