What to say on your first call
Calling a county line or clinic
"Hello. I live in ________ County. I would like help for [myself / my child / my family member]. I have been feeling ________ for about ________."
"I have [Medi-Cal / no insurance / I'm not sure]. What services can I get?"
"Is there a cost? Is there a sliding fee?"
"Do you have someone who speaks ________?" (Or say your language and ask for an interpreter.)
"Who can see my records, and when would you have to share something?"
"What can I use while I wait for an appointment?"
Calling about someone else
"I'm worried about my ________. They have been ________. What should I do, and can someone talk with them?"
Before you hang up, write down: the name of the person, the date, and what to do next.
You do not have to share your immigration status to ask what help exists. If someone is in danger right now, hang up and call 911.
