Before you sign: questions for a bank, card or loan
For a bank or credit union account:
- Which IDs do you accept? Do you accept an ITIN, passport or matrĂcula?
- Is there a monthly fee? How can I avoid it?
- Are there overdraft fees? Can I get an account with no overdrafts?
- How much do I need to open it?
- Is this account FDIC or NCUA insured?
For a credit card, loan or lending circle:
- Do you report my payments to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion?
- What is the interest rate (APR)? What fees are there?
- For a secured card: how much is the deposit, and can it graduate to a regular card?
- What happens if I pay late?
- Can I get a copy of everything I sign?
Stop and walk away if:
- They want a fee before doing anything
- They want payment in gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or crypto
- They promise to fix my credit or offer a "new credit identity"
- They rush me or will not put things in writing
