Volunteer ground rules for immigration form help
We always
- Help for free. No fee, no donation, no gifts for form help.
- Make sure a lawyer or DOJ accredited representative screened the person and chose the form
- Write only what the person tells us
- Translate word for word, without adding anything
- Sign the preparer or interpreter section with our real name and contact information, or follow our event's signature plan
- Let only the applicant sign as the applicant
- Send every legal question to the lawyer or accredited representative
We never
- Say whether someone qualifies or which form they need
- Suggest an answer or tell anyone to leave something out
- Call ourselves notarios, consultants or experts
- Talk to USCIS or the court for someone
- Keep copies or photos of people's papers on our phones
- Share anyone's story without their clear permission
If a neighbor asks for advice, we say: "I can help write, but I cannot advise. Let's ask the lawyer."
