What to say to my employer

What to say to my employer
When my card will expire soon
"I want to let you know early. My work permit expires on ____________. I filed my renewal on ____________, and I will bring you my new card as soon as it arrives. Renewals no longer get an automatic extension, so if the new card is late, I may have to stop working for a while. Can we talk about unpaid leave or holding my job until then?"
If my employer asks for papers I do not have to show
"The I-9 rules let me choose which documents to show from the official list. My work permit is a List A document, so it is enough by itself. I would like to use it."
If my employer says my card expires too soon
"My card is valid until ____________. The rules say an employer should not reject a valid document because it expires soon. You can check again on the expiration date."
Write down: the date, who you spoke with, and what they said. Keep it at home, not at work.
