This page is general information. Do Not Lose Hope does not provide counseling, legal or crisis help.
Why does community matter so much?
Many LGBTQ+ immigrants carry two kinds of distance at once: from home, and sometimes from family or faith communities that did not accept them. Being with people who understand both can ease a lot of that weight.
The Billy DeFrank Center in San Jose names its purpose plainly: to help break isolation and loneliness (DeFrank Center). Loneliness is a health issue too. The U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory links it to higher risk of early death (Surgeon General advisory, checked October 21, 2026).
Where can I find LGBTQ+ community in my language or culture?
Spanish speakers and Latine families
- PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula, "Estamos Contigo": PFLAG in Spanish, first Wednesday of each month, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., on Zoom. Free.
- Somos Familia (Oakland): a bilingual Spanish and English organization supporting Latine families with LGBTQ members. 510-385-9659, info@somosfamiliabay.org (Somos Familia, checked October 21, 2026).
Asian and Pacific Islander communities
- PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula, Support for Asian and Pacific Islander folks: third Tuesday of each month, 7 to 9 p.m., on Zoom (PFLAG SJP).
South Asian communities
- Trikone: a volunteer run Bay Area group founded in 1986 for LGBTQ people with roots in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Tibet. It has a women's group and a parents' group, and lists a Desi LGBTQ Helpline at 1-908-367-3374 (Trikone, checked October 21, 2026).
Trans and nonbinary people and their families
- PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula, Families of Trans Youth and Young Adults: in person at the Redwood City Main Library, 1044 Middlefield Road, first Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon, and on Zoom third Saturdays (PFLAG SJP).
- Trans Lifeline: peer support from trans and nonbinary people, weekdays, with Spanish.
- Santa Clara County's The Q Corner: a county program with support groups and resources for the LGBTQ+ community. Start with Behavioral Health Services, (800) 704-0900 (Santa Clara County, checked October 19, 2026).
Everyone
- San Mateo County Pride Center: peer groups, youth programs and mental health services, now online (sanmateopride.org).
- Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center: social events, a garden club, a "Vintage" group and discussion groups in San Jose. 408-293-3040, fabulous@defrank.org.
How do I find an affirming congregation?
Many faith traditions have LGBTQ+ inclusive communities and directories to find them. Search these:
- United Methodist: Reconciling Ministries Network, find a reconciling ministry (RMN, checked October 21, 2026).
- Jewish: Keshet's Equality Directory of welcoming clergy, staff and organizations (Keshet, checked October 21, 2026).
- Catholic: DignityUSA supports LGBTQIA+ Catholics and lists chapters and affinity groups on its communities page (DignityUSA, checked October 21, 2026).
- Muslim: Muslims for Progressive Values has LGBTQI resources, a chapters page and an Alliance of Inclusive Muslims (MPV, checked October 21, 2026).
If your tradition is not listed, ask an LGBTQ+ group above. Members often know which local congregations are welcoming.
What should I ask before I visit?
You can check a place out before you commit. Here are questions we suggest asking, by email or in person:
- "Are LGBTQ+ people welcome as full members here?"
- "Can LGBTQ+ people serve, lead or marry here?"
- "Is there an LGBTQ+ group or a person I can talk to first?"
- "Do you have services or groups in my language?"
Red flags. Walk away if a group tells you your orientation or gender identity must be changed or "healed," pressures you to come out or stay hidden, or asks about your immigration status for no clear reason.
How can I stay safe while I look?
Our suggestions:
- You decide who knows. Share your identity, your status, or both, only when you are ready.
- Meet in public first, or start with online groups.
- Protect your information. You do not need to give your immigration status to join a support group. If a form asks, you can skip it or ask why.
- Watch for scams. Be careful with anyone who offers to fix your papers for a fee and is not a lawyer or accredited representative. See Warning signs of an immigration scam.
- If you are in danger at home, see Which helpline to call.
What about legal help?
Being LGBTQ+ can be part of some immigration cases, including asylum. See Can I get asylum because I am LGBTQ+? and Free legal help in the Bay Area. Immigration Equality, a national group for LGBTQ and HIV positive immigrants, takes legal questions through a confidential online form (Immigration Equality, checked October 21, 2026).
Questions people ask
I am not out to my family. Can I still join? Yes. Most groups listed meet online, and you can use only your first name.
I still believe in my faith. Is that OK? Yes. Many LGBTQ+ people keep a strong faith, and the directories above exist for that reason.
My parents want to understand. Where can they go? PFLAG meetings and Somos Familia welcome parents. See Words about sexual orientation and gender identity explained for families.
Are these groups free? PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula meetings are free. Ask others about any costs.
