This page helps you reach EDD. It is general information, not legal advice. To learn whether you qualify for unemployment, see Can I get unemployment after being fired or quitting?. If EDD said no, see How to appeal an unemployment denial.
Which way of reaching EDD is fastest?
It depends on what you need. We know the waiting is hard when rent is due. Pick the tool that fits the job, and use more than one if you need to.
| What you need | Best first try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Check if a payment went out, certify, get your 1099G | Self service line 1-866-333-4606 or UI Online | Works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No wait for a person. |
| A quick question about your claim | Live chat in UI Online | Open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
| A question that needs a written record | "Contact Us" message in UI Online | You keep a copy of what you asked. |
| A problem only a person can fix | Phone 1-800-300-5616 | Agents answer 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific on weekdays. |
| You do not have a UI Online account | Ask EDD online form | Built for people without an account. |
| You want to sit with someone | An America's Job Center of California | In person help near you. |
EDD's own pages list all of these: the Contact Unemployment page and the main Contact EDD page. EDD calls myEDD the fastest way to apply for unemployment benefits.
How do I use live chat and messages?
Both live inside your account.
- Go to myEDD and log in.
- Select UI Online.
- For live chat, choose the blue Help button on your UI Online homepage. Chat runs Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- For a message, choose Contact Us. Write one clear question. Add your claim dates and the notice name if a letter confused you.
EDD does not post how long a reply takes. Take a screenshot of every message you send and every answer you get. If a reply never comes, you have proof you tried.
In UI Online you can also see your claim and payment details, certify every two weeks, update your address, and see or reschedule a phone interview, as the UI Online FAQ explains. It cannot reschedule in person or same day appointments.
When is the best time to call?
Avoid Monday and Tuesday mornings before 10 a.m. EDD itself says those are its busiest times. Try later in the week, or later in the day.
Tips that help when you do get through:
- Have your claim details, notices and a pen ready before you dial.
- Ask for the agent's first name and write down the date and time.
- At the end, repeat back what they promised: "So you will send a new form by mail this week?"
- If the call drops, write down when it dropped. Call back and say so.
There is also a second unemployment customer service number listed on the Contact EDD page: 833-978-2511.
Is there a line in my language?
Yes. Interpreters are free. EDD says so on its contact page. Unemployment lines (checked October 21, 2026):
| Language | Number |
|---|---|
| English and Spanish | 1-800-300-5616 |
| Armenian | 1-855-528-1518 |
| Cantonese | 1-800-547-3506 |
| Korean | 1-844-660-0877 |
| Mandarin | 1-866-303-0706 |
| Tagalog | 1-866-395-1513 |
| Vietnamese | 1-800-547-2058 |
| All other languages | 1-800-300-5616, then ask for an interpreter |
For disability and Paid Family Leave, call the English number and press 3 for a free interpreter. Spanish has its own lines: Disability 1-866-658-8846 and Paid Family Leave 1-877-379-3819.
Deaf or hard of hearing: EDD's unemployment TTY is 1-800-815-9387. You can also call California Relay at 711 and give the operator 1-800-300-5616. Video relay calls are handled like regular phone calls.
What if I cannot use UI Online?
UI Online needs a Social Security number to register. EDD's UI Online FAQ says the EDD Customer Account Number does not replace it. Unemployment itself also requires a Social Security number or work authorization, as EDD's eligibility page explains. If you have a valid work permit and an SSN, you can use UI Online.
If you do not have an account yet, or cannot get in:
- Use Ask EDD to send a question in writing.
- Call the phone line for your language.
- Go in person to an America's Job Center of California.
Disability or Paid Family Leave without an SSN? You can still file on paper. EDD's page for undocumented workers says so, and that these benefits will not affect your path to citizenship. See Disability and Paid Family Leave pay, with or without papers.
What if a deadline is coming?
Do not wait for EDD to call you back. A deadline does not pause because the phone lines are busy.
- Notice of Determination or Notice of Overpayment: you have 30 days from the mailing date to appeal. Mail the Appeal Form DE 1000M, or a letter, to the address at the top of the notice. EDD's appeals page says online submission through myEDD is the fastest and most secure way to send documents, and that mail is postmarked when it is processed, so mail early. Full steps: How to appeal an unemployment denial.
- Wrong wages on your award notice: the notice tells you to tell EDD within 30 days of its mailing date. See What if wages are missing from my claim?
- EDD says you owe money back: see EDD says you were overpaid.
- Keep certifying. EDD says to keep certifying for benefits while an appeal is pending. You can only be paid for weeks you certified.
Lost the notice? Call 1-800-300-5616 or message through UI Online for a copy. If the 30 days are almost gone, send a short appeal letter anyway with your full name, address, phone number, Social Security number, the decision you disagree with and the words "I disagree with the EDD's decision." You can explain more at the hearing.
What if nothing works?
If you have tried for weeks, add pressure in writing and ask for outside help.
- Send a written complaint. EDD's Contact Unemployment page lists a mailing address for its Comments, Suggestions, and/or Complaints form (DE 8123): Employment Development Department, PO Box 826880, UISD MIC-40, Sacramento, CA 94280-0001.
- Ask your state legislator's office. Find your Assembly member and state senator at Find Your California Representative. Many district offices do casework with state agencies. One Assembly office, for example, lists case status updates, back payment support, notice explanations and appeal submission among its casework. Call the district office, say you have an EDD claim problem, and ask what they can do and what they need from you. EDD still makes the decision on your claim.
- Get free legal help if money is being denied or taken back. See Who can help?
What should I have ready when I reach someone?
- Your full name as it appears on your claim, and any other names you have used
- Your Social Security number
- Your claim start date and your mailing address on file
- Every EDD letter, with its form number (for example DE 1080CZ, DE 1444CT or DE 429DI) and its mailing date
- Your last employer's name, address and your last day of work
- A short list of your questions, most important first
Questions people ask
Can I just go to an office instead? Yes. America's Job Centers of California help in person. Use the EDD Office Locator to find one. For disability and Paid Family Leave, EDD also lists State Disability Insurance offices.
Will calling over and over hurt my claim? No. Nothing on EDD's pages says calling hurts a claim. Just keep your story the same every time and keep notes.
Can a family member call for me? Ask the agent what they need first. They may need you on the line to agree. Have your helper sit with you during the call instead.
Can my immigration status come up when I call? EDD checks immigration status and work authorization through the Department of Homeland Security for unemployment, as its undocumented workers page explains. If you have questions about your status, talk to a free legal helper before you file. See Free legal help in the Bay Area.
Is there a disability or Paid Family Leave online option? Yes. In myEDD you can send confidential claim questions through SDI Online by choosing your claim and then "Request Claim Update" (Contact EDD).
